There comes a time in all of our lives when we discover that one (or 3 in my case) beauty product we can’t live without. Since I started wearing makeup in the about the 7th grade, I’ve definitely had my fair share of love affairs with cosmetics and beauty products in general. Like most affairs, they fizzled out or became irrelevant as trends changed. Much like the vivid sparkly green MAC eye-shadow I purchased when I was 16 years old, some items were just not meant to move forward with you through life.
Eventually though, I decided to stop trying to make “grass green” happen (cause it’s never going to happen) and slowly compiled a few items that have quickly become staples for me.
A quick moment for self love first…
Now, calling any makeup products “essential” for me has always been a bit of an internal battle. I’m a girl who loves to play with makeup and really have fun with it on nights out, while still appreciating a nice fresh nude-y look during the day. Yet on the flip side I can also be a little critical of myself for using makeup, especially to create a “natural” look. I had spent so many self-conscious years hiding behind makeup because I didn’t like how I looked without it. So once I’d finally began to love myself au natural, I kind of beat myself up for “going back to makeup”.
Part of cutting the bullshit, for me, was (and is) not only calling myself out on my totally wack habits of hiding my natural self. But ALSO calling myself out for in turn feeling like crap for choosing to enjoy makeup! Why oh why do we make it so hard to just like ourselves no matter what state we’re in?! I pinned myself in a hyper-critical corner where I was basically damned (in my eyes)no matter what I did. So my point is, learn from the wars I had with myself. Having beauty products you don’t want to live without is awesome, but just make sure you love the natural you first. Take it from someone who didn’t :).
Down to business!
These are in no particular order, each serves it’s own beautiful purpose in my world. Enjoy!
1) NYX Honey Dew Me Up Primer
So right off the bat I just freaking love the way this little bottle looks! Amirite?! Now, full disclosure if you are the type of person who really needs primer that’s going to be a true BB cream style or pore erasing primer…this is not your guy. I’ve seen some reviews out there where people weren’t loving that it didn’t act like a traditional primer. I get that, BUT it’s all in the name. The word “dew” to me automatically implies there’s some kind of highlighting effect. Also one of it’s selling points are the 24k gold flakes…so if a glow is a surprise to you…I’m sorry? As a nice bonus there is added collagen which, according to NYX, is added to help give your skin a smoother appearance. So to start, I love the way this product sinks into my skin but is still present enough to make my makeup application a breeze. It’s really soft and light on the skin, and the formula isn’t sticky in the least. I usually wipe the excess off the applicator so it doesn’t drip and spread the rest on the back of my (cleaned) hand. With freshly washed fingers I then apply it to my skin in a circular motion. It usually absorbs and dries in the time it takes me to turn the kettle on for tea. As I mentioned, it does in fact have a very subtle highlighting property to it which shines through your makeup beautifully. Now, I’m no pro makeup/beauty blogger and this is just my personal opinion, but my best makeup days always start with this. Plus you really cannot beat the price of this stuff! It usually runs about $17 on their website you can check it out here for more info! UPDATE: I have since been made aware of an all natural product that does something similar, but with some added skincare benefits. It’s called Farsali Rose Gold Elixir, I’ll be ordering some soon and will put out a review of my comparison).
Pro Tip: use a little dab of this stuff on your lips before using matte liquid lipsticks for extra moisture and an even better finish, just make sure it’s absorbed first 🙂
2. Moroccan Oil Hair Thickening Lotion
I have pretty fine hair. As a result I have always been naturally drawn to any kind of hair product proclaiming things like “intense volume” or “ten times thicker”. Some products have for sure been favoured over the years, but let’s be real our hair is our hair and no amount of hair product marketing terms are going to change that.
So that’s why I was kinda shocked when the Moroccan Oil Hair Thickening Lotion actually made my hair feel thicker and fuller! Whether my hair actually is thicker is up for debate but the way I see it the bottle didn’t promise permanent life changing results.
To begin with, this shit smells uhhh-mazing. I’d probably still use it everyday for the smell alone, even if it did nothing. The coolest part about this stuff for me and my fine-ass hair (see what I did there? I’m so funny); was that my hair didn’t look like a dumpster-fire the day after washing it.
Ever since I’ve been using this , I haven’t even had a need for dry shampoo! Which is a relief since that stuff really dries my scalp hair out (I know that’s the point of dry shampoo, but that still doesn’t mean it’s a pleasant feeling!). I have no idea what it is about this product that makes my hair stay fresh looking. The point is, it delivers on what it says while smelling like a dream plus doing a little extra. You really can’t ask for more.
3. Colourpop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick (in Midi)
No secret that matte liquid long wear lipsticks are huge right now. You can tons of brands to choose from, I’ve only tried a small portion and have a bit of a bucket list. At present my collection includes a number of Kylie lip kits, Colourpop, Kat Von D, NYX and Smashbox shades. I will more than likely do a comparison post between all those guys later on, but on the daily, Colourpop has the winning shade for my complexion.
I stumbled upon Midi in a random order I did a while back and fell in love with it. It’s the first liquid matte lipstick I’ve ever been able to just “throw on”. I could freely opt out of lip-liner if I wanted to, and with it being the perfect rosy nude shade it really does work with any daytime occasion. Being able to throw this on in a hurry scores major points for me too. I actually carried the first one I got with me so often that somewhere between swapping out purses I lost it. My boyfriend had a great time watching me tear the house apart looking for it before finally grabbing my phone and ordering more. Seriously, I really do not want to live without this. Like, I almost cried when I couldn’t find the first one before a night out. I know, I’m kinda sad LOL.
So there you have it! The 3 products whose discontinuation would
mildly upset devastate me. If you use any of the above, or end up trying them drop me a line and let me know what you thought! Orrrr if you happen to have tried my faves and have some fun alternatives/dupes please be kind and share your knowledge :).
I need a contingency plan if the worst ever does happen.
